Old Ironsides
Old Ironsides. From those around us during this tour I kept hearing, “Oh my Gawd, this is so cool. This boat is like really old. Was this a real boat in the Navy?” This my friends is the USS Constitution, one of the original six frigates of the United States Navy. The air is powerful when walking aboard. The deck is narrow by today’s standards, but the masts rising into the sky leaves one in wonderment. Yes, this was, and still is an active Naval Vessel. The oldest active ship in the current US Navy actually.
This magnificent ship received her nickname from a battle with the HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812. During the battle cannonballs from the HMS Guerriere bounced off the sides of the USS Constitution. Noticing the phenomenon the Sailors pronounced, “Hazzah, her sides are made of Iron!”
